Fried Bannock Recipe
Bannock, a traditional bread originating from Indigenous cultures, is versatile and uncomplicated to prepare. This delicious fried version is perfect for a quick snack or as a delightful accompaniment to a hearty meal.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups plain flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- 3/4 cup milk (or enough to form a dough)
- Oil for frying
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well to ensure even distribution of the dry ingredients.
- Add the melted butter and milk to the dry mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. If the mixture is too sticky, sprinkle in a little extra flour.
- On a floured surface, gently knead the dough until it's smooth, taking care not to overwork it.
- Divide the dough into small balls and flatten each one slightly, giving them a rustic shape.
- In a large frying pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the flattened dough pieces into the oil, frying until golden brown on both sides.
- Drain the fried bannock on kitchen paper before serving hot, with butter, jam, or your favourite topping.
Enjoy this traditional treat, which highlights the simplicity and warmth of home-cooked cuisine!
